RENÉ DE LANGE
ARTIST, PRINT DESIGNER & CREATIVE REBEL
René was born an artist, and her poor Mum’s walls were the first casualties. Left unattended, René could usually be found drawing, painting or creating something she probably shouldn’t have been creating on the wallpaper.
Growing up in South Africa, she spent her childhood immersed in a colourful dream world of African animals, collage, painting and drawing. Art Club after school became papier-mâché at weekends and, quite often, drawing for days on end.
After completing her MA in Printed Textiles at the Royal College of Art, René spent over a decade working as a Print Designer for brands including Debenhams, Marks & Spencer and Age of Reason.
Her work is driven by a love of bold colour, expressive markmaking and the beautiful imperfections that make things feel human. Her MA dissertation explored Wabi Sabi — the Japanese philosophy of finding beauty in the imperfect, impermanent and incomplete.
René brings that same spirit to her art: playful, instinctive and never too polished. She believes that when we create from a place of joy, that energy finds its way into the things we surround ourselves with.
A self confessed creative rebel, René draws inspiration from Art Deco, her South African roots, travel and her eclectic 1930s seaside home, filled with African crafts, colour and artwork collected for their stories and memories.
Her approach to interiors is unapologetically maximalist; mixing print, colour, pattern, texture and art to create spaces that feel joyful, personal and full of life.
“I want to give people the confidence to be creative in their own homes; to mix colour, art, plants and pattern fearlessly, and make their space completely
